1. Varghese Kurien was born on 26 November 1921 in a Syrian Christian family in the city of Kozhikode in the state of Kerala. 
2. Verghese Kurien, a brilliant student since childhood, graduated in science from Loyla College, Chennai in the year 1940. 
3. After that he obtained an engineering degree from GC Engineering College by staying in Chennai itself.

7. He received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1948. 
8. In this exercise, he had studied dairy farming as a subject.
9. It is interesting that Dr. Kurien was not interested in dairy farming in the beginning and he was studying it only due to government scholarship.
10. But later he took dairy technology seriously and went to Australia in 1952-53 before setting up a government scholarship on New Zealand and Amul.

1. Dr. Varghese Kurien returned to India from USA after obtaining his master’s degree. 
2. And it was only in the year 1948 that he joined the Department of Dairy run by the Government of India. 
3. The following year in 1949, he was sent as a Dairy Engineer to the Government Research Creamery (a factory for making butter ghee etc.) at Anand in the state of Gujarat. Dr. Kurien started working there only to fulfill his bond. And soon Bemon quit his job.
4. He was about to return from Anand when Tribhuvandas Patel, the founder of Kaira District Milk Producers Association Limited (KDCMPUL), stopped him and persuaded him to work with him for a few days.

7. From December to March, when the production of milk is high, the farmers did not get any to sell the milk. 
8. In such a situation, if milk was converted into powder, then the matter would have been made. But till that time, there was only the technique of making cow’s milk powder.
9. In this way, Dr. Kurien called his batchmate in the US, H. M. Dalaya, to Anand and persuaded him to stay there. 
10. Soon H. M. Dalaya invented skim milk powder and condensed milk from buffalo milk.
