നരകാസുരവധം എന്നിവയും ആട്ടക്കഥകളായി
വിരചിതമായിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ആട്ടക്കഥകളിൽ കേമം
നളചരിതം തന്നെ.
കഥാസാരം
വിദര്‍ഭയിലെ രാജാവാണ്‌ ഭീമന്‍.
സന്താനസഭാഗ്യമില്ലാതിരുന്ന രാജാവ്‌
ദുഃഖിതനായിരുന്നു. ദമന മഹർഷി കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ
വരികയും സല്‍ക്കാരത്തിൽ മനസ്സു നിറഞ്ഞ്‌
അനുഗ്രഹിക്കുകയുമുണ്ടായി. രാജാ വിന്‌ മൂന്ന്‌
പുത്രന്മാരും ഒരു പുത്രിയുമുണ്ടായി, ദമൻ, നന്തന്‍,
ദമനന്‍, ദമയന്തി എന്നിവരാണവര്‍. ദമയന്തി
ദേവന്മാരെക്കുടി ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്ന സന്ദര്യത്തിൽ
വളര്‍ന്നു.
ഈ സമയത്ത്‌ നിഷധരാജ്യത്തെ വിരസേനന്റെ
പുത്രനായി,നളന് വളര്‍ന്നു. നാരദമുനി രണ്ട്‌
കൊട്ടാരങ്ങളിലും സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ച്‌ ഇരുവരേയും
കുറിച്ച്‌ പറഞ്ഞു. രാജഹംസങ്ങള്‍ ഇതുപോലെ
നിഷധത്തിലും വിദര്‍ഭ യിലും വന്ന്‌
ഇരുവരുടേയും രൂപസഷ്ഠവവും
ഗുണഗണങ്ങളും പരസ്പരം അറിയിച്ചു.
രണ്ടുപേരും അനുരാഗവിവശരായി.
ദമയന്തിയുടെ സ്വയംവരമായി. ഇന്ദ്രന്‍, വരുണന്‍,
യമന്‍, അഗ്നി ദേവന്മാര്‍ എന്നിവർ
സ്വയംവരത്തിനായി പുറപ്പെട്ടു. ദമയന്തിയുടെ ]
രൂപലാവണ്യമറിഞ്ഞ ദേവന്മാര്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക്‌
ദമയന്തിയെ ലഭിക്കുന്നതി നായി നളനെ ദൂതയച്ചു. ]
നളന് ദമയന്തിയെ അന്തഃപുരത്തില്‍ കണ്ടു.
ദേവന്മാരുടെ ആഗ്രഹം അറിയിച്ചു. താൻ
നളനെയാണ്‌ വരിക്കുക യെന്ന്‌ ദമയത്തി,പ്റഞ്ഞു. ;
സ്വയംവരത്തിന്‌ നാലുദേവന്മാരും’നള്രൂപ ത്തിൽ
നിന്നു. കുഴങ്ങിയ ദമയന്തി യഥാര്‍ത്ഥ നളനെ
കാണിച്ചു തരാ നായി ദേവന്മാരോട്‌ ]
പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ ഫ്രീതരായി. നളനും ദമ |
യന്തിയും വിവാഹിതരായി.
തിരിച്ചു പോ. ന്മാരെ കലി കണ്ടു.
കലിയും ദ കൊതിച്ച്‌ വരികയാണ്‌.
വെള്ളം വാര്‍ന്നുപോയിട്ട്‌ അണകെ
ദേവന്മാര്‍ ചോദിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കലി
കുപിതനഃയി. നളദമ യന്തിമാരെ
പിരിച്ചയക്കുമെന്ന്‌ ശപഥം ചെയ്തു.
നളന്റെ സോദരനായ പുഷ്കരനെ വശത്താക്കി
കള്ളചൂതു കളിച്ച്‌ നളനെ രാജ്യത്തുനിന്നും
പുറത്താക്കി. നളനും ദമയന്തിയും വനത്തി ലേക്ക്‌
പോയി. നളന്റെ പരാജയം കണ്ട ദമയന്തി
വിദര്‍ഭയില്‍ നിന്നും തേരാളിയെ വരുത്തി
പുത്രനേയും പുത്രിയേയും കൊട്ടാരത്തിലേക്ക്‌
അയച്ചിരുന്നു.
കാട്ടിലലഞ്ഞ നളദമയന്തിമാര്‍ ക്ഷീണിതരായി.
കലിബാധിതനായ നളന് ദമയന്തി
ക്ഷീണിച്ചുറങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ അവളുടെ
വസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പാതിയെടുത്ത്‌
വനത്തിനുള്ളിലേക്ക്‌ പോയി. ഉറക്കമുണര്‍ന്ന
ദമയന്തി നളനെ കാണാതെ വിഷമിക്കുമ്പോള്‍
പെരുമ്പാമ്പ്‌ ആക്രമിച്ചു. ഒരു കാട്ടാളന്‍ രക്ഷിച്ചു.
കാട്ടാളന്‍ ദമയന്തിയെ മോഹിച്ചപ്പോൾ ദമയന്തി
വേറെ മാര്‍ഗ്ഗമില്ലാതെ കാട്ടാളനെ ശപിച്ച്‌
ഭസ്മമാക്കി.
അലഞ്ഞുതിരിഞ്ഞ നളന് കാട്ടുതീയിൽ പെട്ട
നാഗരാജാവിനെ രക്ഷിച്ചു. കാര്‍ക്കോടകന്‍ ദംശിച്ച്‌
നളന് വിരൂഷനായി. നളന്റെ വൈരൂപ്യം
അനുഗ്രഹമാകുമെന്ന്‌ – നാഗരാജാവ്‌ അറിയിച്ചു.
സ്വന്തം രൂപം വേണ്ടപ്പോൾ സ്വീകരിക്കാൻ – രണ്ട്‌
ദിവ്യ വസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ നളന് കൊടുത്തു.
വനത്തിലലഞ്ഞ ദമയന്തിയെ ഒരു കച്ചവടസംഘം
രക്ഷിച്ച്‌ ചോദി രാജ്യത്തെത്തിച്ചു. അവൾ
ഭ്രാന്തിയെപ്പോലെയായിത്തീര്‍ന്നിരുന്നു. താനാ
രാണെന്ന്‌ അറിയിച്ചില്‌_
നളദമയന്തിമാരെ തിരഞ്ഞ്‌ വിദര്‍ഭരാജാവ്‌
പലരേയും അയച്ചു. ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണന്‍ ദമയന്തിയെ
കണ്ടെത്തി വിദര്‍ഭയിലെത്തിച്ചു.
ദമയന്തിയുടെ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശപ്രകാരം നളനെ
അന്വേഷിച്ച്‌ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മ ണൻ അയോധ്യയിലെ
ഭൂതുപര്‍ണ്ണ രാജാവിന്റെ കൊട്ടാരത്ത്‌ ലേ ബ്രാഹു
കനായ തേരാളി നളനാണെന്ന സംശയം
അറിയിച്ചു. ച ഹം
ബുദ്ധിമതിയായ ദമയന്തി ഭൂതുപര്‍ണ്ണന്റെ
കൊട്ടാരത്തിലേക്ക്‌ ദൂതനെ ആയച്ചു. ദമയന്തിയുടെ
രണ്ടാം സ്വയംവരം അറിയിച്ചാണ്‌ ദൂതന്‍ ചെന്നത്‌.

കുലസ്ത്രീകൾക്ക്‌ കോപം പാടി ല്ലെന്നും നളന് ഒരു
തെറ്റും ഇല്ലെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു. തുടര്‍ന്ന്‌ കേശിനി
ഒളിഞ്ഞു നിന്ന്‌ ബാഹുകനെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചു. ]
ജുതുപര്‍ണ്ണന്‌ ഭക്ഷണം ഒരു ക്കുവാനായി
സാമഗ്രികള്‍ കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്‌ കേശിനി കണ്ടു.
കുടത്തില്‍ വെള്ളം നിറഞ്ഞതും, ]
ഭക്ഷണമുണ്ടായതും പൊടുന്നനെയായിരുന്നു. ഇത്‌
രാജാവിന്‌ നല്‍കിയ ബാഹുകന്‍ തേരിൽ ചാരി ]
നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. തേരിൽ വാടിയ പൂക്കളെ കണ്ട്‌
ബാഹുകന്‍ അതിനെ പിടിച്ച്‌ തിരുമ്പി,

കളിയിലൂടെത്തന്നെ പുഷ്ക്കരനെ പുറത്താക്കി
രാജ്യം ഭരിച്ചു. പാതിവ്രത്യത്തിനും, വിപത്തിനെ
ധീരമായി നേരിടുന്നതിനും ഉത്തമ
മാതൃകയായാണ്‌ ദമയന്തിയെ കാണുന്നത്‌.
