നിന്നും ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്‌ സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ ബി.എ നേടി.
അടിയന്തിരാവസ്ഥക്കാലത്തും പിന്നീടും
സി.പി.ഐ അനുഭാവം പുലര്‍ത്തി. ജനകീയ
സാംസ്ക്കാരിക വേദി രൂപീകരിച്ചപ്പോള്‍
അതുമായി സഹകരിച്ചു.പല തൊഴിലുകൾ ]
ചെയ്ത ശേഷം 1987- ല്‍ കേരള സര്‍ക്കാര്‍,
സര്‍വ്വീസില്‍ ക്ലര്‍ക്കായി ജോലിയില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചു.
1999 – ല്‍ ബുദ്ധമതം സ്വീകരിച്ചു തിരക്കഥകളും
ചലച്ചിത്ര ഗാനങ്ങളും രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. 2013 ജൂലൈ 29
-ന്‌ ജോലിയില്‍ നിന്നും വിരമിച്ചു. ടെലിവിഷൻ
സീരിയലുകളിലും സിനിമകളിലും
അഭിനയിക്കുന്നു. ഭാര്യ വിജയലക്ഷ്മി
കവയത്രിയാണ്‌. ലോകം ക്ഷോഭത്തിനും
പ്രക്ഷോഭത്തിനും പ്രതിരോധത്തിനും നടുവിൽ
കിടന്ന്‌ കനലാട്ടം ആടുമ്പോഴാണ്‌ ബാലചന്ദ്രന്റെ
കവിത ഒരു വിസ്‌ഫോടനം പോലെ
പെയ്തിറങ്ങിയത്‌. ‘മുട്ടിത്തുറക്കുന്നു ഞാൻ
മുഴുഭ്രാന്തിന്റെ കത്തും ജനാലകൾ” എന്ന്‌
ബാലചന്ദ്രന് എഴുതിയപ്പോള്‍ അത്‌ പുതു
തലമുറയുടെ കവിതയിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരു വാതായനം
കൂടി തുറന്നിട്ടു. മാത്യഭൂമി ബുക്ക്‌ മാനേജര്‍
ആയിരുന്ന ജി.എൻ. പിള്ള മരണക്കിടക്കയിൽ
വച്ച്‌ ബാലചന്ദ്രനോട്‌ പറഞ്ഞു: “കവിയാവുക
എന്നതിനര്‍ത്ഥം ഭൂമിയിലെ കണ്ണീര്‍ മുഴുക്കെ ഒരു
തുള്ളി തുവാതെ കൈക്കുടന്നയില്‍ ഏറ്റു വാങ്ങുക
എന്നാണ്‌.”
ഒരു നേരത്തെ ആഹാരത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ശിവാജി ]
ഗണേശന്റെ പടം ഇറങ്ങിയത്‌ ഓട്ടോയിൽ
വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു നടന്ന ഒരു കാലം ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ]
ചുള്ളിക്കാടിന്‌ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, ബാലചന്ദ്രന് തന്റെ
മനസ്സും ശരീരവും ആത്മാവും
അന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പലായനമായി മാറി. ആ |
അനുഭവങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കവിതയും
ഗദ്യത്തില്‍ ചിദംബര സ്മരണകളുമായി ]

ചുള്ളിക്കാടിനെക്കുറിച്ച്‌ പറയാനുള്ളത്‌.
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാക്കുകളിൽത്തന്നെ
പറയുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു ധിക്കാരിയും

കവിശ്രേഷ്ഠർ എഴുതി പേരെടുത്ത കാലത്താണ്‌
ബാല ചന്ദ്രൻ ചുള്ളിക്കാട് എഴുതിത്തുടങ്ങിയത്‌.
മാത്രമല്ല എൻ.വി. കൃഷ്ണവാര്യർ:അക്കിത്തം,
ഒളപ്പമണ്ണ അക്കിത്തം, വയലാര്‍, ഒ.എന്‍.വി
എന്നിവരും സജീവമായ കാലഷ്ട്ട്ത്തിലാണ്‌
ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ കേരളീയരുടെ ചുള്ളിക്കാടായത്‌.
ആധുനിക കവികളായ അയ്യപ്പപ്പണിക്കര്‍,
മാധവന്‍ അയ്യപ്പത്ത്‌, കഭകൊട്‌. സച്ചിദാനന്ദൻ,
കടമ്മനിട്ട എസിവരുടെ അറിയപ്പെട്ട
കാലഘട്ടമായിരുന്നു അന്ന്‌. മാത്യഭൂമി
ആഴ്ചപ്പതിപ്പും എം.
ഗോവിന്ദന്റെ സമീക്ഷയും ആയി രുന്നു
കവികളായി അറിയപ്പെടാന്‍ കേരളീയര്‍
അംഗീകരിച്ച പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങള്‍. പക്ഷേ
ബാലചന്ദ്രന് ചുള്ളിക്കാട് ഈ
പ്രസിഷികരണങ്ങളിലൂടെയല്ല കവിയായത്‌.
ചുള്ളിക്കാട് കേര ളത്തിന്റെ തെരുവുകളിലും
പൊതുസ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും ചൊല്ലി സാധാരണ
ജനങ്ങളുടെ ഹൃദയങ്ങളിലൂടെ കവിയായി മാറി.
കടമ്മനിട്ടയും ഇങ്ങനെയായിരുന്നു.
ബ്രഹ്തിന്റേയും നെരൂദയു ടേയും കവിതകളും
ഇവര്‍ തെരുവുകളില്‍ ചൊല്ലിയിരുന്നു. ആ
കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ താ കലുഷിതമായ
പശ്ചാത്തലമാണ്‌ ചുള്ളിക്കാടിലെ കവിയെ
സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത്‌.
കമ്പോഡിയ, വിയറ്റ്നാം, കനിയ
എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങളില്‍, തീക്ഷമായ
പ്രതികരണങ്ങളോടെ സജീവമായ കേരളത്തിലെ
വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥി രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലുണ്ടായ്‌ വലിയൊരു
ആവേശത്തിന്റെ കാലഘട്ടമാണ്‌
ചുള്ളിക്കാടിന്റെ കലിത്വം പരിപുഷ്ടമാകുന്നത്‌.
ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ചുള്ളിക്കാടിന്റെ ജീവിതം
സംഭവബഹുലമായിരുന്നു. വീടുപേക്ഷിച്ച്‌
എറണാകുളം മഹാരാജാസ്‌ കോളേജിലായിരുന്നു
വാസം. തെരുവിൽ പിച്ച തെണ്ടി ജീവിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌_
ചുള്ളിക്കാട് തന്നെ പറയുന്നു: “ഭിക്ഷാടനം
ഉപജീവന മാര്‍ഗ്ഗമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. ഇഷ്ടിക
ക്കളത്തില്‍ തൊഴിലാളിയായിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. പാരൽ
കോളേജിലെ അധ്യാ പകന്‍, ഹോട്ടൽ ബോയ്‌,
പത്രപ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്‍ എന്നീ ജോലികൾ
ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്‌. കേരളത്തിൽ ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ
സജീവമായിരുന്ന കവിയര ങ്ങുകളിൽ
ചുള്ളിക്കാടുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ലോഡ്ജുകളിലും ]
സ്ത്ര ങ്ങളിലുമായിരുന്നു കവിത |
ചൊല്ലിയിരുന്നത്‌. ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ചുള്ളിക്കാട് ;
ആവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു ചൊല്ലിയിരുന്നതും ജന ]
ങ്ങളാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട്‌ ചൊല്ലിയിരുന്നതും ‘യാത്രാമൊഴി
കവിതയായി രുന്നു.
വീടുപേക്ഷിച്ചു പോയ ചുള്ളിക്കാട് ന
അസു ഖമാണെന്നറിഞ്ഞ്‌ വീട്ടിലേക്ക്‌ ചെല്ലുമ്പോൾ
അമ്മയുടെ പെരു മാറ്റത്തിൽ ദസ്നായി ;
തിരിച്ചു പോകുന്നു. വിൽ കരിച്ച്
കിടന്നപ്പോള്‍ ചേച്ചിയുടെ കൈവശം കുറച്ചു
സംഖ്യ നല്‍കി സംസ്ക്കാരത്തിനു നില്‍ക്കാതെ
തിരിച്ചു പോവുകയാണ്‌.

‘ഞാന്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ട ഒരു കവിയാണ്‌.
സ്വപ്നങ്ങൾ കൊട്ഞ്ഞു പോയ ഒരു
തലമുറയാണ്‌ ഞങ്ങളുടേത്‌. തീക്ഷ്ണമായ ]
ശക്തിയും ശിവനടന സമാനമായ
ഉര്‍ജ്ജപ്രസാദവും കവിതയ്ക്കു നല്‍കി അതിനെ

സാഹിത്യോത്സവങ്ങളില്‍ മലയ്യാള്‌കവിതയേയും ]
ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സാഹിത്യ ത്തേയും പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചു.

ഭാവതീവ്രമായ ആധുനിക വ്യഥകളെ ചുളളിക്കാട്‌
പകര്‍ത്തി.

അദ്ദേഹംഎഴുതി
“ലോകാവസാനം വരേയ്ക്കും പിറക്കാതെ
പോകട്ടെ നീയെന്‍ മകനേ, നരകങ്ങള്‍
വാ പിളര്‍ക്കുമ്പോഴെരിഞ്ഞു വിളിക്കുവാന്‍
ആരെനിക്കുള്ളൂ… നീയല്ലാതെ – എങ്കിലും…”
ചുള്ളിക്കാട് ബുദ്ധമതം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. എങ്കിലും
വിശ്വാസത്തില്‍
തന്റേതു മാത്രമായ സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങളുമായി
ജീവിക്കുന്നു. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ശരിയെന്ന്‌
വിചാരിക്കുന്നത്‌ ചെയ്യുക – പലപ്പോഴും
ചുള്ളിക്കാട് താന്‍ സ്വയം ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്‌ ഞാൻ
പറയുന്നു. ചുള്ളിക്കാടിന്റെ ബ്ലോഗിൽ
തുറമുഖം) ‘മഹാകാവ്യം’ എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു
രചനയുണ്ട്‌. അതിൽ പ്രൈമറി സ്കൂളിൽ കൂടെ
പഠിച്ചിരുന്ന ശശി എന്ന യി ലി
പറയുന്നുണ്ട്‌. അവന്‍ ഒരു തോട്ടിയു; നാണ്‌.
മനുഷ്യമലം തകരടാങ്കിൽ ടു ദൂരെ
കളയുന്നതാണ്‌ അച്ഛന്റെ ജോലി: റ്റു കുട്ടികൾ
തീട്ടം കോരി എന്നു എ
കരിഞ്ഞ ഒരു ചിരി രുന്നു ശശിയുടെ
പ്രതികരണം. ആ റുത്ത കുട്ടി ക്കൊപ്പം ആരും
ഇരുന്നില്ല. ക ബഞ്ചിലോ
ജനല്‍പ്പട്‌ യ്മിലേ ക്കിരുന്നു.
പരതിയ,
ഒരു ൦ ഇല്ലാതെ. ആയിടയ്ക്ക്‌
ഗാന്ധിജയന്തിദിവസം ബാലചന്ദ്രന് ഒരു പുസ്തകം
കൊടുത്ത്‌ രാവുണ്ണിപ്പിള്ള സാർ പ്രസംഗിക്കാൻ
പറഞ്ഞു. ആ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ ഒരു വരി
ഇങ്ങനെയായിരുന്നു. “തോട്ടിയിൽ നിന്നും
വമിക്കുന്ന ദുര്‍ഗന്ധം അവന്റെ മലത്തിന്റേതല്ല;
നിങ്ങളുടെ മലത്തിന്റേതാണ്‌.” ഇതു
വായിച്ചതോടെ ശശിയേയും, അവന്റെ
സമൂഹത്തേയും മറ്റൊരു വിധത്തിൽ കാണാൻ
ബാല ചന്ദ്രന് കഴിഞ്ഞുവെന്ന്‌ അദ്ദേഹം
പറയുന്നുണ്ട്‌.
പ്രണയത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും
പ്രണയാനുഭവത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ചുള്ളിക്കാട്
പറഞ്ഞത്‌:
ആനന്ദത്തിനും അനശ്വരതയ്ക്കും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള
രഹസ്യാന്വേഷണം പ്രണയത്തിലുണ്ട്‌ (അതിന്റെ
വേദനയും യാതനയും നിർവ തിയും പരിഭവവും
വിശ്വാസവും സ്മൃതിയും വിസ്മൃതിയും
ദുമതിയും വിക്ഷോഭവും വൈരുദ്ധ്യവും
ശൂന്യതയും പ്രത ബാധയും എല്ലാം
പ്രണയത്തിലുണ്ട്‌,.അതില്‍ ജീവിതവും മരണ
വുമുണ്ട്‌. എന്റെ പ്രണ്യാനുഭവത്തിന്റെ
പൊട്ടും പൊടിയുമാണ്‌ പ്രണയത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള
കവിതകള്‍.
കവിതയുടെ രത്നച്ചുരുക്കം
കുറെ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം തന്റെ
മുന്‍കാമുകിയെ കവി കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു. ഏതോ ഒരു
സന്ദര്‍ശനമുറിയില്‍ ആണ്‌ കണ്ടുമുട്ടു ന്നത്‌.
രണ്ടുപേരും ഒന്നും മിണ്ടുന്നില്ല; മനം
കുടിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്‌. ജീവിതത്തിലെ വെളിച്ചം
പൊലിഞ്ഞതുപോലെ പകല്‍ മറ ഞ്ഞുപോയതും
ഓര്‍മ്മകളാകുന്ന കിളികൾ കൂട്ടിലേക്ക്‌ പറന്നു
പോകുന്നതും നോക്കി നിൽക്കുകയാണ്‌ കവി. ]
ഇപ്പോള്‍ കാഴ്ച കളിൽ അ വര്‍പര സ്പരം
നഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയാണ്‌. ഈ വി ]
ചിന്തകള്‍ കവിയുടെ നെഞ്ചിടിപ്പിന്റെ താളം കൂടു ]
ന്നു. പഴയ പ്രണയാനുഭവങ്ങളുടെ സംഗീതമുള്ള ;
നിശ്വാസം കവിക്ക്‌ അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു തുടങ്ങി.
പൊന്‍ചെമ്പകം പൂത്തുലഞ്ഞ തന്റെ ങ്കള്‌ പണ്ടേ
കരിഞ്ഞു പോയതെങ്കിലും ച്‌
ചുണ്ടിലെ ആര്‍ദ്രമായ കവിത കരള്‍; ” ]
വരണ്ടുപോയെങ്കിലും ഒരു വാഭഴ്പോലും
ഉരിയാടാനാ കാതെ ഏകാന്ത്മായൊരു കരച്ചിൽ ]
തൊണ്ടയില്‍ കുരുങ്ങുന്നു; വീണ്ടും ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍
നീളുകയാണ്‌. ഓര്‍മ്മക്ളുടെ അലയാഴി തേടി കവി ]
പോകുന്നു. അതിൽ പ്രണയാര്‍ദ്രമായ ചില സന്ദര്‍ഭ ]
ങ്ങള്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നു,” |
കാമുകിയുടെ സ്വര്‍ണ്ണനിറത്തിലുള്ള മൈലാ
ഞ്ചിയെഴുതിയ വിരൽ ആദ്യമായി തൊട്ടപ്പോള്‍
മനസ്സില്‍ കിനാവ്‌ പകര്‍ന്നത്‌ കവി ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നു.
കാമുകിയുടെ കണ്ണിലെ കൃഷ്ണകാന്തങ്ങളുടെ
കിരണമേറ്റ്‌ മനസ്സ്‌ സന്തോഷിച്ചതും എല്ലാം
ചിദംബരത്തെ കുങ്കുമം തൊട്ട്‌ വിശുദ്ധമായ സന്ധ്യ
പോലെ മറവിയില്‍ മാഞ്ഞിരിക്കുകയാണ്‌.
പിന്നീട്‌ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കുകളിൽ
അമര്‍ന്നുപോകുന്നു കവി. മരണവേഗത്തിലോടുന്ന
വണ്ടികളേയും മദ്യലഹരിയില്‍ ആഴ പോയ
രാത്രികളേയും സത്രങ്ങളുടെ പല മുഖം കണ്ട്‌
ചുമരുക ളേയും കവി ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നു.
പ്രണയം അസ്വസ്ഥതയാണെങ്കിലും അത്‌
പ്രക, ൂതിയോടൊപ്പമുള്ള ഒരു ലയനമാണ്റെട്്‌
കവിയുടെ പ്രണയാര്‍ദ്രമായ ഓര ര
അറിയിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ പ്രണയ്യപ്രവാഹത്തിൽ
നിന്നും അകന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഞു കൂടിയര്‍്‌
ശ്വാസംമുട്ടുന്ന നഗരവീഥികളി
വാഹനങ്ങളിലും തായി മാകുന്ന
സത്രങ്ങളിലും മദ്യ ത്തിലുമ രുന്നു.

കവി വിചാരി ന്നു,ചിലപ്പോഴൊക്കെ
ക പ്രാണന്‍ ദുഃഖിതനായി
ഭൂതകാ। അലഞ്ഞുപോകും.
ദുഃഖ ഇരുളില്‍ പല ജന്മങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്‌
സാ നല്‍കുന്ന കാരുണ്യമാര്‍ന്ന തന്റെ
കാമുകിയുടെ മുഖം താന്‍ കാണാറുണ്ട്‌.
കവി ഓര്‍മ്മകളില്‍ നിന്നും ഉണര്‍ന്നു. പരസ്പരം ]
നന്ദി ചൊല്ലാതെ പിരിയുകയത്ര നന്നു. ഇനിയൊരു
സമാഗമം സാധ്യമല്ല. പുഴയും കടലും
സംഗമിക്കുന്ന വികാരവിക്ഷോഭങ്ങളുടെ;
കരച്ചിലിന്റെ ഒരു അഴിമുഖത്തേക്ക്‌ നമ്മൾക്ക്‌
ഇനി പോകേണ്ടതില്ല. ഇരിക്കുന്ന
സന്ദര്‍ശകമുറിയിൽ നിന്നും പോകുവാൻ
സമയമാകുന്നു. കവി ഈ സന്ദർശനം
അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ്‌.
ഉള്ളില്‍ നിറയുന്ന ദുഃഖ ത്തോടെ ഈ
പ്രണയസത്യത്തെ തിരിച്ചറിയുകയാണ്‌ ; നമ്മൾ
രണ്ടു പേരും രാത്രിയുടെ നിഴലുകളാണ്‌…“പണ്ടേ
പിരിഞ്ഞവരാണ്‌… നമ്മുടെ പകലുകള്‍
പോയിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു.
